Varus, Give Me Back My Legions!

I always found this story in history really interesting. The account goes that in 9 CE, Varus, the Roman emperor Augustus’s general in Germany, lost three legions in the Teutoburg Forest. German tribes, led by Arminius, attacked the legions and halted Roman expansion across the Rhine river. This all happened despite warnings given to Varus. It is said that Augustus was so distraught, he walked around his imperial palace shouting: "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!"

I wanted the design to reflect the gloomy aftermath of what took place in the Teutoburg Forest. I placed a few tools of war around the bottom of the design. A few javelins stick out of trees, a couple roman swords are seen sticking out of the ground, and a single roman helmet lays in the brush in front of a layer ominous fog.
